Náplavka will be our first stop is Prague´s most popular promenade - you can walk, ride your bike, feed the swans, chat with friends, visit a sauna or gallery on the water, have a coffee or a drink, or just sit and observe the ever-changing colour of the sky over the river. From spring to autumn, various events take place here - concerts, food festivals and dance evenings, as well as the regular Saturday farmers market, one of the most popular in Prague.
According to ancient legends, Vyšehrad is the oldest seat of Czech princes; in fact, the local settlement was established in the mid-10 the century. Situated on a rocky promontory above the Vltava River, it offers stunning views of the city, and the park area holds hidden architectural treasures including the rare Romanesque Rotunda of St Martin, the neo-Gothic Church of St Peter and Paul, the National Czech Cemetery and beautiful green park.
Established in 1869 on the grounds of Vyšehrad Castle in Prague, the Vyšehrad Cemetery is the final resting place of many composers, artists, sculptors, writers, and those from the world of science and politics. The centerpiece of the cemetery is the Slavín tomb designed by Antonín Wiehl, a large and notable tomb located within Vyšehrad cemetery.
Once an hour, the Vyšehrad district is filled with the sound of bells from the chapter church, which has undergone a number of modifications in the 950 years since it was built. In 1903, its construction was finally completed, giving the church its current neo-Gothic appearance. The interior is richly decorated with Art Nouveau ornamental and figural wall paintings. The church's treasury houses an exhibition of jewelry and rare textiles from the Vyšehrad Chapter.
The oldest building in all of Prague. St. Martin’s Rotunda is a unique building located in Vyšehrad that was built in the 11th century. It is currently the only unspoiled monument from the era of Vratislav I. What I find particularly amazing about this place is its many secrets that reveal themselves from time to time. Did you know that it’s only recently that architectural researchers uncovered a secret underground floor in the building?
The originally Gothic church was rebuilt and augmented in baroque style. The church is a part of the former convent of the Augustinian Order in Prague's Karlov. It was founded by the emperor Charles IV as a part of the convent of the Augustinian Order within the project of a big development of the New Town district. Such investments into the town's development were the result of the determination of Charles IV to enhance the City of Prague to match its new role—the capital of the Holy Roman Empire. The proof for this is the unusual shape of the church in reference to its patron. The octagonal floor plan refers directly to the main building of the imperial palace of Charles the Great in Aachen—to the Aachen Cathedral, that was erected on the hexagonal floor plan with an inserted octagon. The central floor plan of the church is very uncommon and seldom used in Gothic architecture. Documentation of the vaulting system has not survived; it is supposed that the main vault of the church was supported by the pillar in the middle or that it was the vaulting based on four columns.
At the time of its establishment from the year 1867 to 1875, it was considered to be the largest maternity hospital in Europe. The complex is built in the northern German neo-Gothic style from bright red unpainted bricks – it was believed that they were safer as regards the transmission of infection. After an extensive renovation at the end of the 20th century, the pavilions continue to serve as obstetrics, neonatal and gynaecological facilities of the highest European standard.
The unmistakeable modern white towers with gilded spires dating to the 1960s mark the Benedictine monastery Na Slovanech, whose original steeples were destroyed by fire in 1945 during a bombing raid. The church was founded by Charles IV in 1347 and became a centre of learning, art and Slavic literature. In the cloisters you can find the remains of priceless Gothic wall paintings; the Church of the Virgin Mary is painted in Beuron style.
This pillar of modern architecture in Prague “danced” onto the Rašínovo Embankment in 1996. The project comes from the drawing board of world-renowned architects Vlado Milunić and Frank O. Gehry. Its concept was inspired by the dance skills of the famous film couple – the stone tower symbolizes Fred Astaire and the glass tower, his partner Ginger Rogers. Unquestionably the main landmark of the Žižkov district, at 216 m in height, it's also the tallest building in the city. With a 360° view, Prague is laid out before your eyes from the viewing platform at 93 m. One entire floor is dedicated to relaxation and above all to top quality gourmet experiences. The architects Václav Aulický and Jiří Kozák designed the tower in the 1980s. Ten giant sculptures of babies by leading Czech artist David Černý crawl all over the outside of the tower.
